YouthSAFE Roles and Guidelines for
Participants and Adults

YouthSAFE’s Tween Group: Saturdays 11am - 12:30pm, Higher Ground
-LGBTQIA+ youth ages 10-13 are welcome at Tween Group, along with supporting adults (e.g. family, guardians, etc.) Adults are encouraged to stay for the first meeting, but are welcome to drop their youth off on subsequent meetings. Adults who stay for meetings will have the opportunity to share resources and form community with each other.

-2-3 adult volunteers from YouthSAFE will be present to provide supervision, facilitate activities, and foster discussion about the issues group members bring.

YouthSAFE’s Teen Group: Fridays 6:30pm - 8:30pm, Higher Ground
-LGBTQIA+ youth ages 13-19 are welcome at Teen Group. 2-3 adult volunteers from YouthSAFE will be present to provide supervision, facilitate activities, and foster discussion about the issues group members bring.

-In order to provide a youth-centric space, supporting adults (e.g. family, guardians, etc.) are not invited to stay during youth meetings; however, adults looking for community in supporting their LGBTQ+ youth are encouraged to attend the adult discussions that happen during YouthSAFE’s Tween Group and/or the Greensboro chapter of PFLAG.

Youth Volunteers:
-Youth Volunteers are youth aged 18-20 who are gaining experience in a volunteer role. Youth Volunteers can facilitate tween group meetings, and will be paired with an adult volunteer for support. They are encouraged to serve as mentors to tween participants, and can also help in other capacities such as community outreach, social media, and fundraising.

-Youth Volunteers can continue to attend teen meetings as youth participants until they turn 20, at which point they must transition out of attending teen meetings. If they are interested in learning to facilitate teen meetings, they can return to the teen meeting setting in an adult volunteer capacity when they are 21+.

Adult Volunteers:
Adult Volunteers are adults aged 21+ who help to facilitate YouthSAFE programming, including facilitating tween and/or teen meetings. Adult Volunteers aim to commit to volunteering for at least one year in order to provide consistency for meetings and stability for our volunteer- run organization. In addition to facilitating meetings, adult volunteers can help with any of the other roles listed here.

Leadership Team:
Volunteers can serve on the leadership team after a minimum of 6 months volunteering with YouthSAFE, and must commit to at least 2 years on the leadership team. Ideally, the leadership team is 4-6 members large, and no more than half the team rotates off at a time. Together, the leadership team is responsible for organizational structure and cohesion, including the following: conducting regular volunteer check-ins, serving on the non-profit board, managing our finances, and managing the schedule for volunteer coverage of meetings. The leadership team commits to be transparent with the rest of the volunteer team.

All volunteers (teen, adult, and leadership) participate in a horizontal structure in which everyone’s work is important and everyone contributes to the culture of our organization. Anyone can bring ideas, hopes, dreams, and concerns to the group at any time. We commit to supporting each other in the important work of supporting LGBTQ+ youth and nourishing intergenerational LGBTQ+ community.
